YOURSAY | ‘Her simple but thought-provoking message said it all.’
I'm Goh Liu Ying and this is my Olympic story
Negarawan: Goh Liu Ying and Chan Peng Soon fought their way up from their 86th ranking, beating many mixed-pairs much higher in ranking along the way, till they reached the finals to challenge the Indonesian mixed-pair of no 1 ranking.
Liu Ying and Peng Soon were clearly a class below the Indonesian pair. However, Liu Ying and Peng Soon had a much bigger achievement than the Indonesian pair, and for that matter, any other pair in the mixed doubles event.
This is what really matters. That silver is worth its weight in gold.
Anonymous #97901717: Liu Ying, your message is a message of inspiration.
For so long, we have seen so much focus on throwing good money at organisations and end up with nothing. I have been disenchanted about that and the only thing I look for in the recent past is the final score for any games. No more watching actual games of any sport as it became painful.
Thanks to the diving, mixed doubles, keirin and a few more coming results, I am starting to have hope that maybe I am wrong. Maybe Malaysians really ‘boleh’, and not just a Bolehland dream.
The determination of a few can overcome the bureaucracy and politics in Malaysian sports organisations. Thanks you, Liu Ying, for reviving the dream. The dream that Malaysia Boleh is not just an empty slogan.
Tangling: Liu Ying, you and Peng Soon, there is only one word to describe your achievement, ‘Bravo’.
Against all odds, you two have managed the unimaginable, overcoming the injuries you sustained shows your determination at winning regardless of your “small body” and “weaker muscles”.
Fair Play: I have nothing to say or add. Liu Ying’s simple but thought-provoking message said it all.
Rocky: I couldn't remember the match that you didn't win, but the matches that you won are vividly clear in my mind.
You have not only brought a medal home, you have also brought us hope in trying times like these, that one day, we will regain our former glory. Hats off to you.
Ash Burn: A story and commitment grounded in humility and hard work in the silence of a conviction to the self-determination. I hope the bigots will see your achievements, not your ‘dressing’ or your ‘ethnicity’.
Thank you for doing our nation proud on the world’s most magnificent festival of human spirit.
Headhunter: You had overcome insurmountable odds and you have exceeded expectations. You also have a great fighting spirit which can inspire many young people to achieve their dreams.
You are still young and can have another crack at an Olympic gold medal the next time around.
Anonymous #12566075: A simple girl with lack of physical gifts as demanded by sport competition has achieved a dream in winning the silver medal for Malaysia. She brought honour not only to herself but to the country.
Mosquitobrain: Liu Ying, you've set a feat that is hard for others to follow in many years to come. Don't play-play with this petite lady. She is packed with power. All the best in your future endeavours.
BohChaiSee: When I saw her play in New Zealand, I said to myself this young lady is special. She was quick and lethal at the front of the court. I told some of my badminton pundit friends that she would go far and she duly proved me right.
In my book, she is among the best in the world and not just in Malaysia. As for Peng Soon, what more can you ask of him? He delivered, didn't he?
Oxymoronictendencies: Bravo, Liu Ying, and your partner, Peng Soon. The Malaysian media that ran negative headlines about your fabulous achievement of winning silver should be ashamed of themselves.
The global media sadly believes it has some mandate from above to tell people how they should think and feel. They don't. They never have. And never will. They know nothing. You have made us true Malaysians truly proud. Be sure of that, Liu Ying.
Those media groups that denigrated your achievement should make a front page apology. However, unlike you, they do not have the courage or character.
Cogito Ergo Sum: You are credit to your race, the Malaysian race.
Citizen_Zero: Liu Ying, thank you. Thank you for being who you are. For being the best that you can be, for living to the fullest of your potential. No one can ask you for more. Gold does not necessarily mean winning, silver does not necessarily mean losing.
To you and Peng Soon, in our minds you are already the best in the world, and your journey to your achievement now is already worth more than its weight in gold. We are proud of you, we are with you and wish you all the best.
Quigonbond: I teared up too. Well done, guys.
Anonymous_1419577444: We have now seen the two extremes of ‘Malaysia Boleh’.
One type is our Olympic medallists like Liu Ying. The other type is Malaysian Official 1 and Jho Low. Our children should learn about this in school.
Roger 5201: You are not just Goh Liu Ying. You are Goh Liu Ying.
