Langkawi MP Nawawi Ahmad has denied saying that Malaysian Official 1 is the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, as claimed by the opposition in the Kedah Legislative Assembly.
Nawawi is quoted in Berita Harian today as saying that his statement on Facebook has nothing to do with the court documents filed by the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) on 1MDB.
“There are two things different, where DOJ mentions MO1 is Malaysia Official One, while I said Malaysia Official Number One,” he clarified.
He maintained that he did not commit any crime as it is his personal right to define something based on the Federal Constitution.
“I am of the view there is nothing wrong to define something that is not related to DOJ matters and 1MDB, as raised by the opposition state representatives.
“The Malaysian Official One in the DOJ papers could be anyone and I interpret it based on the constitution that I understand,” Nawawi is quoted as saying by the Malay daily.
He said his Facebook comment had been manipulated by the opposition, after former Kedah menteri besar Mukhriz Mahathir had, in a heated state assembly session yesterday, asked Nawawi to apologise to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
In his Facebook comment yesterday, which was edited four hours later, the Langkawi MP said based on the Federal Constitution, it is the Yang di-Pertuan Agong who is responsible for the government.
"According to the Federal Constitution, Malaysia's government was formed with three separate and independent entities, the judiciary headed by the chief justice, the legislative led by the Parliament speaker, and the executive directed by the prime minister.
"All three entities are responsible to the Agong.
"Hence, according to the constitution, MO1 is the Agong," he explained.
In the edited version, the last line in the comment is replaced with the sentence, "Hence, according to the constitution (Prime Minister) Najib (Abdul Razak) is not MO1, as he is either M02, M03, or MO4."
