Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak should clarify his relationship with Penang-born billionaire Jho Low, said DAP veteran leader Lim Kit Siang.
Lim said this in reference to Low's key role in the alleged theft of US$3.5 billion from 1MDB, according to the US Department of Justice (DOJ).
"Let Najib state clearly who was making use of whom in the 1MDB scandal – Jho Low making use of Najib or Najib making use of Jho Low?
"Who was taking who for a ride?" he said in a statement today.
He pointed out that the DOJ in its 136-page asset seizure filing outlined how Low spent the stolen money on residential properties and artworks, while also making reference to an unnamed top Malaysian government leader.
"Was Jho Low the 'mastermind' of the 1MDB global financial scandal... or was Najib the “mastermind” resulting in the reference to 'Malaysian Official 1' 36 times in the 136-page DOJ complaint?" he asked.
The DOJ had moved to seized US$1 billion in assets believed to have been acquired using funds stolen from 1MDB.
Lim added that the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in its investigation on 1MDB also failed to call two men, who were key to the issue.
"One reason why the PAC report on 1MDB is incomplete and unsatisfactory is that two elephants in the room were ignored – Najib and Jho Low, when they were central and strategic to every phase of the 1MDB scandal.
"I believe that the various Umno divisional leaders and members would be more interested to know about the real nature of the Najib-Jho Low relationship and the 1MDB global scandal, instead of Najib repeating canards accusing DAP of being anti-Malay and anti-Islam," he said.
He added that there was no better person to explain the true nature of the relationship than Najib himself.
"Why is Najib so coy about revealing the real Najib-Jho Low relationship?" he asked.
