Chief Justice Arifin Zakaria said scanners are among the modern equipment to be installed in all court complexes nationwide in an effort to enhance security and to avoid untoward incidents.

“Security at court complexes is still vulnerable, including those in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya,” he said after performing the ground-breaking ceremony for the new Kota Baru Court Complex at Tunjung in Kota Baru yesterday.

Arifin said a study to enhance the security features of the court complexes was being conducted with the assistance of the United States Security Department.

“The Court Marshal Service is making an assessment of security of our court complexes and will give us a full report for implementation in all courts, starting with Kuala Lumpur,” he said when asked to comment on the level of security of courts in the face of threats from militant groups such as the Islamic State (IS).

However, the chief justice said if there was a particular hearing that requires enhanced security, it would be provided by the police.

Asked about the hearing involving IS militants, he said five special judges were handling the cases, of which four were in peninsula and one in Sabah.

Arifin said the new Kota Baru Court Complex is proof of the government’s high commitment towards the judiciary and improving the justice delivery system.

The new Kota Baru Court Complex, to be build on a 2.68ha site at a cost of about RM100 million, is expected to be completed in April 2020.
