Look after your backyard first, Penang speaker tells BN

Since the DAP has called off its plan to hold snap polls in Penang, BN has urged that a vote of no confidence be filed against Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng at the state legislative assembly.

Penang BN chief Teng Chang Yeow said the no-confidence vote should be called, as Lim failed to convince its partner PKR to hold snap polls to seek a fresh mandate after he was slapped with two graft charges.

To this, Lim retorted that he was willing to face the no-concidence vote if state opposition leader Jahara Hamid files the matter.

But Penang speaker Law Choo Kiang does not think the move to file a vote of no confidence against Lim is necessary.

"Has the state government faced any instability? As far as I know, the CM has the solid support of its allies in Pakatan Harapan, " Law told Malaysiakini.

Following Lim's declaration on Sunday that DAP will no longer pursue the plan to hold snap polls, its allies in PKR and Parti Amanah Negara have heaped praise on Lim for keeping to his promise not to decide on the matter unilaterally.

Law said the BN should take care of its own backyard where "thunderstorms and undercurrents" are hitting them.

"There is not a single comment from them on the 1MDB fiasco. So ridiculous," said the PKR Bukit Tambun assemblyperson.

He was referring to the recent US Department of Justice's civil forfeiture case to seize assets allegedly purchased with funds siphoned from 1MDB.

Law also slammed Teng for describing Lim as a "butler", and saying the party had more seats in the state assembly (19) but had to kowtow to PKR, which had ten seats, when deciding on snap polls.

Umno has 10 seats while PAS has one in the 40-member state assembly.

Those still living in a "kowtow to Umno" culture will never know and appreciate the consensus politics practised by Pakatan Harapan, Law said.

He was referring to the decision not to hold snap polls in Penang after PKR disagreed with the move.

DAP and PKR also failed to agree on a request by the latter for two DAP seats if they were to agree on early polls.

To this, Law said "BN should be praising Pakatan rather then shouting only political words".

No-confidence vote against Najib

Meanwhile, Lim's political secretary Wong Hon Wai said it was "wishful thinking" for Teng and Umno Pulau Betong assemblyperson Muhammad Farid Saad to raise the no-confidence vote issue.

"They should convince their friends in BN first to file a vote of no confidence against Prime Minister Najib Razak.

"Only then they have the moral ground to ask Penang Pakatan Harapan assemblypersons to file the motion against Lim.

Wong claimed the state government was solid, unlike BN ,which he described as " shaky" due to the international probe on the 1MDB.

Najib had chaired 1MDB's board of advisors until the board was dissolved in May.

The prime minister has denied using 1MDB's money for personal gains, and attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali has cleared him of any wrongdoing.

"It is Terengganu (ruled by BN) which needs to call for a vote of no concidence against the menteri besar, " added Wong, who is the Air Itam assemblyperson.

Speculation of snap polls is rife as Kijal assemblyperson Ahmad Said faces possible disciplinary action from Umno for criticising the party.

"The Penang Harapan assemblypersons are prepared to face whatever motion which is political in nature filed by BN and we are prepared to defeat it, " said Wong.
