Amanah will teach DAP a lesson if it poses a threat to Islam, said a party vice-president, Hasanuddin Mohd Yunus.

He meant it in a very literal sense, saying DAP was open to learning about Islam if it had erred.

"I asked DAP organising secretary Anthony Loke for permission if I could say this.

"Amanah, and other Muslim bodies including tonight's panelists, will 'school' DAP if they are becoming an enemy (of Islam).

"We will change them, educate them, because they are bound by the federal constitution," Hasanuddin said at a forum in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan last night.

Hasanuddin cited an instance when DAP had apologised after one of its members questioned Malaysia's decision to bar citizens of Israel from the country.

"When reprimanded in private, it apologised (publicly)."

He also said that the Pakatan Harapan agreement which DAP signed, pledged to uphold Islam as the official religion of Malaysia, as well as protect the rights of Malays and the Malay rulers.

Other panelists at the forum however questioned DAP's sincerity to protect Islam.

Institute of Strategic Islamic Research Malaysia (Iksim) senior fellow Engku Ahmad Fadzil Engku Ali said DAP was clearly fighting for a secular state, as enshrined in its party constitution.

"The DAP constitution clearly states one of their targets is to make Malaysia a secular country.

"Secular means there is no space for religion in the nation's administration, or in the public space," Engku Ahmad Fadzil said.

He then took a veiled swipe at Hasanuddin and Amanah, saying one should not be blinded to one's own religion simply because one is getting funding.

This is in reference to accusations that the PAS splinter party is a DAP pawn.

DAP had recently come under religious pressure, after Pahang Mufti Abdul Rahman Osman was quoted as saying that they were kafir harbi - non-Muslims who must be opposed.

This was in relation to their objection to PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's hudud bill.
