DAP Taiping MP Nga Kor Ming has denied posting the "dedak" Facebook post that has been alleged to be insulting to the Aidilfitri festivities.
"Instead, I was a victim of the cybertroopers, who are engaged by a certain party with vested interests in a smear campaign against the DAP," he said in a statement today.
"I respect Islam as the religion of the federation. I am determined to uphold the principles enshrined in our federal constitution as a member of parliament," he added.
Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar yesterday said the police are probing Nga under Section 298 of the Penal Code and the Sedition Act 1948, after receiving several police reports.
This is over the allegations that Nga on July 6 allegedly posted a caricature of children and guests receiving Aidilfitri ‘duit raya’ cash packets, likening it to receiving ‘dedak’ or bribery.
Nga denied the alleged post was ever on his Facebook. Checks by Malaysiakini also did not find the said posting.
Nga, who is also Perak DAP chairperson, also posted a denial on Twitter, saying that he has been wrongly maligned.
Nga had previously landed himself in trouble with another Facebook post on July 5, which featured a picture of a lighthouse overlaid over a US flag and a Hari Raya greeting.
That post had also been deleted after drawing brickbats from both netizens and politicians.
Meanwhile, Gerakan vice-president Dominic Lau slammed Nga for allegedly being despicable as the latter only cried of being a victim of the cybertrooper after his controversial Facebook post had drawn flak among the Muslims.
Nga lacked the gut to take responsibility, just like DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang and secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, he said in a statement today.
He questioned why Nga only denied today a Facebook post he was alleged to have put up last Tuesday?
“He never denied nor claimed his Facebook was hacked, he just quietly deleted the posting. Why should he only deny after the top cop said the police are probing the case?” he asked.
He advised political leaders from both sides of the divide, particularly DAP leaders, against instigating the people’s sentiment and insulting the other ethnic groups for cheap publicity.
He urged the police to take stern action against those who damage racial harmony and unity.
