A 76-year-old man arrested for sharing a crude photograph allegedly insulting Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak in a WhatsApp group, has been released on a one-month police bond, police said in Johor Baru today.
Johor Police chief Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said the man had been held under remand after his arrest last Saturday.
The Magistrate's Court did not extend the remand order which expired yesterday as the man was suffering from hypertension and diabetes, he said.
He said the investigation papers had been sent to the DPP and the police were awaiting a report from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.
"After getting the MCMC report, we will go back to the DPP for further instructions," he added.
The man was arrested at his house in Petaling Jaya last Saturday after a police report was made in Johor.
He is being investigated under the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which provides for a fine of up to RM50,000 or imprisonment of up to a year, or both, upon conviction.
