UK should have told us earlier, says IGP on paedophile Huckle case

British authorities should have provided Malaysian police with more details on convicted British paedophile Richard Huckle, inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar said.

Huckle, 30, was on Monday sentenced to 22 counts of life imprisonment by a British judge this week for sexually abusing children in Malaysia and Cambodia.

Asked if there should be more cooperation, Khalid said: "Of course."

"They should have told us all the details earlier for us to work on our side," Khalid is reported as saying by Channel News Asia.

However, he said the UK authorities may have been prevented to do so due to by-laws which stop cooperation with countries with capital punishment.

The UK National Crime Agency earlier said it informed Malaysian police about Huckle in November 2014, three months after it was alerted by Australian authorities.

Huckle was arrested in London in December 2014.

Police now say they want to interview Huckle, so they can pursue the case.

The police are also seeking to make contact with the victims, some of which were abused when they were as young as six months old, while others were abused for years.

UK authorities have already expressed their desire to cooperate with Malaysian authorities in such cases, noting that there was information flow between the authorities in both countries in the Huckle case.
