DAP lodges police report over PAS’ ‘ethnic cleansing’ remark

The DAP Socialist Youth (Tanjong branch) has lodged a police report over a PAS delegate at the party’s muktamar in Kelantan who allegedly remarked that there is ethnic cleansing against the Malays in Penang.

Branch chief Tan Jin Tatt said in his report that the remark by PAS delegate Yaakob Omar was “racist and will result in hatred among certain quarters” in the Malay community towards the Penang government.

“Yaakob also appeared to have warned the Malays that they would be chased out of Penang if they do not have the money; he gave a false impression that the Penang government did not care for the Malays,” said Tan.

“Such false remarks can threaten the harmony and relationship between the different races in Penang,” Tan added.

He was referring to Yaakob’s speech that development projects in Penang over the past few years reflect “subtle ethnic cleansing”.

Yaakob, a PAS leader in Tanjong and a former Penang Island City Councillor, claimed Malay land ownership in Penang had decreased from 28 percent in 2010 to 20 percent in just five years.

He accused state agencies of not helping the Malays in Penang, and claimed that the state government’s development policies were not protective of the community.
