Investigators are looking into "several hundred thousand US dollars" transferred from a 1MDB-linked lawyer to former Goldman Sachs banker Tim Leissner, Bloomberg reported.
Leissner, who was part of a 1MDB deal and recently resigned, received the funds from one-time 1MDB official Jasmine Loo until earlier this year, the financial portal reported, citing sources.
Loo, among officials wanted by Bank Negara Malaysia in its earlier probe, is also said to be a close associate of businessman Jho Low.
“The circumstances of Ms Loo’s and Mr Leissner’s arrangement aren’t clear. But they indicate Mr Leissner’s dealings with people linked to 1MDB extended beyond his role as an adviser from one of Wall Street’s most respected firms,” Bloomberg reported.
One source told Bloomberg that Loo and Leissner had together invested in a separate firm, but the nature of the firm is unclear.
However, Leissner did not disclose the alleged investments he made with Loo as required by the Wall Street firm.
Bloomberg said it could not reach Loo for comment while Low’s lawyers did not respond.
The Wall Street Journal earlier reported that Leissner had gone on "personal leave" in January after confronted by Goldman over an unauthorised reference letter he wrote to another bank on Low’s behalf. He resigned in early February.
Leissner, who is married to celebrity Kimora Lee Simmons, wrote the letter to vouch for Low’s finances as part of a real estate deal.
Leissner and Simmons have previously been photographed with Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor.
