DAP firebrand Hew Kuan Yau today said if he was indeed anti-Malay as claimed by his opponents, he would not be asking voters to elect Abdul Aziz Isa – a Malay candidate – over BN's and PKR's Chinese candidates.
"I am not a Chinese chauvinist, I am not anti-Malay, I am anti-corrupt PBB (Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu) politicians in BN.
"If I was anti-Malay, I wouldn't be appealing for voters in Batu Kitang to concentrate their votes on a Malay candidate and reject PKR's candidate who is Chinese," he said in a statement today.
Hew said this in reference to his recorded ceramah speech in support of Abdul Aziz during the Sarawak election, which was publicised by blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin's Malaysia Today under the title: 'Vote DAP so that we can screw the Malays'.
MCA had since used the video to accuse DAP of racism.
Hew, better known by his moniker 'Superman', decried what he described as mistranslated subtitles of his Mandarin speech by the blog to put him in bad light.
He noted the video on Raja Petra's blog had translated his speech as follows: "Aziz boleh skrew puak Melayu sendiri, skrew Melayu korup sendiri, skrew pok kai puak Melayu sendiri. Ini akan jadi wayang yang terbaik yang patut kita tengok, setuju tak?”
(Aziz can screw their own Malay group, screw their own corrupt Malays, screw pok kai Malay groups. This is the best show that we should watch, do you agree?)
However, Hew claimed the accurate translation should be: "Ayuh kita hantarkan Aziz masuk ke dalam Dewan Undangan Negeri demi skrew bangsa Melayunya, yakni politikus besar yang korup, screw "pokai" di PBB. Inilah babak yang paling menarik. Yang setuju, berikan tepukan".
(Let us send Aziz into the the state assembly to screw his own Malays, that are big politicians who are corrupt, screw pok kai Parti Bersatu Bumipuera. This is the most interesting scene. Those who agree, please clap).
"Umno cybertroopers deliberately twisted the arguments in my Mandarin speech uploaded on UbahTV, Youtube with inaccurate translation.
"They changed 'Parti Bersatu Bumiputera (PBB)' to 'Malays'. That is twisting.
"I am not anti-Malay but I was scolding the corrupt in PBB," he said.
He also accused MCA of conspiring with a "political opportunist" who he claimed masterminded the attack against him.
"In short, the subtitles presented by the BN cybertroopers were inaccurate with the ill-intention to incite Malays to hate DAP," he said.
Hew said in the full-length video, he had also appealed to voters in Simanggang to support DAP's Dayak candidate Leon Jimat Donald and reject the independent candidate who is Chinese.
"DAP is a party that fights for all Malaysians, I am a Malaysian and my spirit is Malaysian.
"The ones playing racial politics are MCA, Umno and other BN component parties," he said.
