A senior citizen and his female passenger cheated death when the Toyota Vios they were travelling in plunged into a 12-metre-deep sewage hole at a construction zone along Jalan Universiti this afternoon.

According to news reports, the pair did not suffer serious injuries.

The man, in his 60s, sustained gashes and bruises but was still conscious. He had even thanked the Fire and Rescue personnel before being taken to the nearby Universiti Malaya Medical Centre.

Images and video clips of the freak accident, which brought traffic in the area to a standstill, have since gone viral on social media.

The car, which suffered massive damage to its front portion, was later pulled out from the hole.
