Dr Mahathir Mohamad has denied urging foreign intervention to oust Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
"I did not ask any foreign governments to interfere. I said that all the means to redress in this country have been shut down by Najib.
"So, I will tell the foreign press about this," he was quoted as saying by Star Online .
The former premier was responding to a statement by Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak who expressed concern over Mahathir's remarks.
Among others, The Weekend Australian quoted Mahathir as stating that while he does not normally appreciate foreign interference in Malaysian affairs, "our avenues for redress have been closed completely”.
Apart from Salleh, the former premier also courted flak from other quarters.
Among them was MCA leader Ti Lian Ker, who described Mahathir's remarks as tantamount to treason.
Meanwhile, Umno supreme council member Irmohizam Ibrahim called it a "dangerous move" and warned that it could potentially jeopardise national security.
Mahathir has been campaigning for Najib's ouster since last year, and accused the prime minister of committing numerous wrongdoings.
Najib has repeatedly denied such allegations. He has also accused Mahathir of conspiring to topple him from power.
