The causeway linking Malaysia and Singapore has sufficient capacity and will not be replaced, the Channel NewsAsia reported today.

Quoting Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, the report said both governments had conducted a joint study and carried out their own projections to reach that conclusion.

"The Causeway actually has sufficient capacity. Replacing the causeway is not the solution," he said on the second day of the Committee of Supply debate.

Instead, the minister said that both sides were working to improve congestion at the borders.

Recently, the Johor’s Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar had suggested that the Johor Causeway be replaced to enable improvement in the traffic flow in Johor Baru.

The 1.05km Johor causeway which links Johor Baru to Woodlands in Singapore was built in 1923.

About 430,000 travellers use the land checkpoints at Woodlands and Tuas daily during festive peak period.

Dr Balakrishnan said both governments were working to improve connectivity between the countries, adding that the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High Speed Rail and the Johor Baharu-Singapore Rapid Transit System Link had seen progress.
