You're a one-trick pony, 1MDB returns fire to Pua

1MDB has described one of its fiercest critics, DAP lawmaker Tony Pua, as a "one-trick pony" capable of only recycling old and stale allegations.

In a media statement today, the firm suggested that the Petaling Jaya Utara MP might also be suffering from selective amnesia.

"1MDB has previously clarified the purpose behind the US$1.4 billion deposit paid to Aabar.

"In fact, the purpose is described in clear and transparent terms in note 24 (a), page 96 of the 1MDB financial statements dated 31.03.2013 and note 23 (a), page 101 of the 1MDB audited financial statements dated 31.03.2014.

"More importantly, for all major payments made by the company, 1MDB has provided detailed explanations along with supporting documentary evidence to the Auditor-General's Department," it said.

1MDB was responding to Pua who argued that the firm's one-paragraph denial of involvement in providing funds for the Hollywood hit 'The Wolf of Wall Street' was insufficient.

Instead, he said the state investment company must explain the alleged transfer of US$1.4 billion to a British Virgin Islands (BVI) company.

"If 1MDB fails to provide clarity on the nature and ownership of Aabar Investment PJS Limited (BVI) with the necessary and appropriate documents, then any denials it makes about Aabar (BVI) not being an 'intermediary' would have zero credibility," he added.

Meanwhile, in its response, 1MDB pointed out that it had thoroughly explained all its major transactions at the recent Public Accounts Committee (PAC) proceedings.

"Pua is a member of the PAC and he not only has the requisite information but in fact, had the opportunity to ask for more information during the proceedings.

"Pua, therefore, clearly has selective amnesia at best, or at worst, is once again up to his old tricks, to recycle allegations, asks questions to which he already knows the answers to and seeks to confuse and mislead the public," it said.
