The government has not yet determined when it will put into force amendments to the Sedition Act, said Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
“The Agong had given his assent to the amendments on June 4, 2015.
“However, the date of enforcement for the amendments to this Act has not yet been determined,” Zahid said in a written parliamentary reply.
Zahid was replying to a question from Ng Wei Aik (DAP-Tanjong) on when the amendment would be enforced and what obstacles have prevented it from being enforced.
The amendments, announced by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak at the 2014 Umno general assembly, allow for criticism of the government and judicial decisions.
However insulting religion and calling for secession would be offences.
There are also stricter punishments including a minimum three-year jail sentence, a maximum of 20 years, and no bail for those charged under the Act.
Najib had previously said he would abolish the Sedition Act in 2012.
