The foreign ministry today assured travellers to Malaysia that the security situation in the country is under control.
It said this after Australia issued a travel warning to its citizens that a terrorist attack on Kuala Lumpur could be in the works.
“It is nothing to be alarmed of and we will continue to keep foreign missions informed on the security developments.
“We also acknowledge the fact that foreign missions are at liberty to provide their own assessment of the security situation in their host countries albeit the fact that it may not be accurate or gives a true reflection on the situation,” it said in a statement.
Australia’s warning comes soon after the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office advised against all travel to the Sabah eastern islands, raising threat level from "general" to "high".
Australia maintains the advisory for its citizens not to travel to the east coast of Sabah, where several tourists have been kidnapped.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Tajuddin Md Isa told Malaysiakini the security situation is under control , and greater surveillance will continue in public areas.
“The public shouldn’t worry,” he said.
