Arrest Dr M? Where have our checks and balances gone?

YOURSAY | ‘Eventually, the pot and kettle must equally be subject to public inquiries.’

Dr M: There is a wish to arrest me

SteveOh: There are many Malaysians who would like answers from Dr Mahathir Mohamad pertaining to his decisions and role in the 'missing 100 billion ringgit' while he was prime minister, an allegation raised by late author Barry Wade in his book, 'Malaysian Maverick'.

There are many skeletons in the Mahathir closet after 22 years of his tenure as country leader. More than 100 innocent Malaysians of 'Operasi Lallang' have yet to receive justice, apology and compensation like the former Lord President. However, no fair-minded Malaysians would like to see Mahathir behind bars for his role of 'devil's advocate' in the 1MDB controversy.

Mahathir may have to answer for his own past wrongdoings, but for now is supported in his tenacity to have the wrongdoers in 1MDB punished. If justice is to be done and seen to be done, eventually the pot and kettle must equally be subject to public inquiries. But I rather think it will never happen because too many big guns will be implicated. This is the law of the jungle in Bolehland.

Anonymous_1421406986: Dr Mahathir, I do not know if you deserve arrest. But why not, if you are a harassment to the government and to the people, whom you have kept sedated and confused all these years by way of your national policies.

You have even succeeded in influencing your once-sworn adversaries, who want to court your friendship today, including DAP and PKR. Most of your recent prattles are for your own survival, or to defend your precious family.

God bestowed you with intelligence, which is to be used for the good of the nation and its people, but you have instead decided to use it for your own personal benefit, yet cleverly making it appear you have done a great favour for Malaysians.

The legacies that you left behind are bursting, one after another, right during your lifetime. And it can only mean that it is payback time. The fact that you fear being arrested is as good as already being arrested.

Buttman: Dr M did a great service to Anwar Ibrahim by sacking him from Umno. Even the 15-year jail sentence imposed on him failed to crush Anwar’s reformist zeal. Now that the nation is on a head-on collision course with disaster, Dr M needs to swallow his pride and put his weight behind the worldwide demand for Anwar's unconditional release. His leadership skills are desperately needed as Najib Abdul Razak's syndicate implodes.

James TCLow: The tussle between the recalcitrant Mahathir and 'nothing to hide' Najib has come to a head. Each of them is looking forward to delivering a knock-out punch. Let 'The Clash of the Titans' show begin.

Worldly Wise: Where are our checks and balances? The Inland Revenue Board, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), the police, the cabinet, the Umno supreme council and Umno delegates, are they all, every one of them, controlled from the top? All top guns are appointed from the top. It is a frightening thought. Our founders never thought that everyone will be corrupt or that everyone will be without self-dignity.

Sadujumat: It's time Dr M walked the unthinkable if he were to get rid of the scourge of this land. Marshal all the supports he still has within Umno and form a grand alliance with any party that shares the same goal. This grand alliance must not be restricted to just Pakatan Hadapan and Dr M's Umno supporters, but also to any existing BN component party that has the mojo to fight Najib and his cohorts.

If there's one person left in Malaysia with the stature and astuteness to hold this unwieldy alliance and pull this off, it has got to be Mahathir.

The Analyser: Arresting Mahathir is about the only thing the Umno government could do that I would support. But Umno is afraid to lose the support he maintains.

Anon1: Do not fret, Dr M, their advisers and publicists will not allow it. To put it bluntly, they will take their chances as to who will be around come the 14th general election (GE14), them or you. So watch what you consume and which hospitals you visit. Personally, I really hope that you'll live for as long as this regime is around.

Legit: Najib will never ever do this or he will be digging his own grave. But then it will be an interesting development. Anwar and Mahathir as neighbours in Bamboo River Hotel!

Possibly then, we might see things changing in the country. Mahathir might also learn a thing or two of his past shenanigans and there's a remote chance he might repent. The top leaders and all their cronies and thieves could face the same fate as Nikolai Ceausescu and his wife. We may see a new nation being born all over again. So it is an interesting thought.

Anna: You are most welcome to join your ex-DPM Anwar in Sungai Buloh, and wait for the other goons to have a grand party there.

Drngsc: We also want you in jail. If your name had been Lim KS or Mat Sabu, you would have been hauled up to Dang Wangi by 2pm and in jail by 4pm.

Afyfy: I wanna ask him only one question. Did he do any mistake during his 22 years as PM that will make the rakyat suffer in future?

JieJie: This dark road we are headed down was first paved by you, Dr M.

Hang Babeuf: Dr M now enters the ranks of the soap opera ‘drama queens’. Playing to the vulgar public galleries. What a sad decline, even and especially for him!

Anonymous_1391693662: It’s getting very interesting. Many birds are going to get killed with one stone.

Headhunter: It would be rather stupid to start another fire when they can't even put out the ones already there. They underestimate the old man. But let them fight to the finish. The end result can only be good for the country.
