Kuala Pilah MP Hasan Malek has come under the spotlight after a banner of his Chinese New Year greeting in Chinese was written in reverse.

The banner, which was placed within the constituency of Kuala Pilah, was in both Malay and Chinese languages.

However, the Chinese text, written from top to bottom, was in reverse, reading: ' Cai Fa Xi Gong '.

The romanised text for ' cai ' (fortune) was also misspelt.

The banner also bore a photograph of Hasan with the words ' Selamat Tahun Baru Cina 2016' (Happy Chinese New Year 2016).

A photograph of the greeting was first highlighted by the ‘We Fully Support Pakatan Harapan’ Facebook page and have since been shared over 630 times.

The blunder has left netizens bemused, with one re-posting a version of the banner so that Hasan appeared upside down.

"This is funny, I didn't know Mandarin is meant to be read from bottom to top," said Facebook user Christine Wong.

"Perhaps there was no Chinese official to check the banner," said Janice Kan.

Strangely, a few comments criticised MCA for the mistake even though the banner was by an Umno MP.

However, some netizens took the mistake positively, likening that reading the message from bottom to top is akin to "rising up" to better things for the Chinese New Year.

Hasan was previously the domestic trade, consumerism and cooperatives minister but was dropped in the cabinet reshuffle last July.
