Incoming Kedah Menteri Besar Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah has yet to take his oath of office but is already finding himself embroiled in a snooze controversy as his opponents accuse him of sleeping on the job.
All this stems from a 36-second video of him with his eyes shut at a palace function, which Bashah claimed was really just showing him appreciating the state monarch's speech with his eyes closed.
As the debate raged on over who is telling the truth, DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang joined in, taking to Twitter with a post that read: "Saw video first time. Bashah slept soundly. All should see".
Apparently unsatisfied, Lim watched the video again and an hour later declared on Twitter that he was convinced that Bashah was indeed fast asleep.
"Saw Bashah video again. He was sleeping deeply. Bashah should not take oath as Kedah menteri besar until he comes clean on it," said Lim.
What may have been a mundane drowsy moment for the 66-year-old became a focal point after out-going Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir took a jibe at Ahmad Bashah, stating that he hoped his successor will not doze off at his swearing in ceremony tomorrow.
Ahmad Bashah had led a successful effort in ousting Mukhriz as menteri besar, forcing his resignation this morning.
Ahmad Bashah is adamant that he was not sleeping in the video, claiming that it may have been "edited" as it did not show the parts where he was awake.
The video showed him with his eyes close throughout the entire 36 seconds.
