'Illogical' doesn’t mean illegal, minister says of RM2.6b case closure

Something that defies logic is not necessarily illegal, says Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek on the attorney-general’s decision to close the cases involving Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali announced today that Najib is cleared of wrongdoing relating to 1MDB's former subsidiary SRC International Sdn Bhd and the RM2.6 billion that went into Najib's personal bank accounts.

Shabery was commenting on criticisms from opposition MPs who are not convinced of Najib’s innocence.

He said the opposition MPs, too, do things which do not automatically make sense but this does not make them criminals.

"Even though they claim tens of thousands (of ringgit) monthly (in travel expenditure) as though they travel back and forth daily, this is not against the law," he said.

However, Shabery did not name those who made those excessive travel claims.

He said the opposition members have a history of opposing issues, with PAS even opposing the formation of Malaysia in 1963.

“What they oppose is not necessarily correct," he said.

The Umno minister added that Apandi should consider offering an explanation if doubts linger on why the prosecutor cleared Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

"It is the AG's responsibility to explain if other issues were raised by the people who wish to understand the issues," Shabery said when met at the Parliament building.

"I believe the AG will be able to explain thoroughly, with legal facts," he said.
