The police said it did not release any statements specifying the locations for possible terrorist attacks.
This comes after Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor stated earlier today that several hotspots around Kuala Lumpur, namely Bukit Bintang, Bangsar and Hartamas, has been identified as potential targets .
"Our media statement on Jan 15 regarding this matter only stated that the police will increase surveillance on safety at public areas," Bukit Aman police headquarters corporate communications head Asmawati Ahmad said in a statement.
She said the police force takes a serious view over such news because it has brought about overwhelming fear among the general public.
"We would advise the public not to easily believe, and stop sharing news which creates uneasiness, especially those not released by the national security agency," Asmawati added.
Tengku Adnan ( photo ) had said the areas targeted by Islamic State (IS) rebels include popular shopping and tourist spots, The Curve Damansara, Solaris Dutamas and the KL Tower.
"We have identified IS hotspots in KL (including) Bukit Bintang, Bangsar, Hartamas, The Curve, Publika and KL Tower," he told reporters.
The Putrajaya MP said authorities are now adopting a high level of vigilance at the identified areas.
In the wake of the Sarinah bombing in Jakarta last week, Tengku Adnan also urged all quarters to lodge a police report should they encounter any suspicious individuals.
Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar yesterday confirmed that authorities have arrested a man suspected to be linked to IS.
Khalid reportedly said that weapons and IS documents were seized from the man arrested at Setiawangsa LRT last Friday.
