Police have arrested a man suspected to be linked to the Islamic State (IS) in Ampang yesterday.

This was revealed by inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar in a Twitter posting this morning.

"Congratulations to the E8 unit of the Special Branch (for) arresting a man suspected (to be an) IS element at Jelatek LRT, Ampang.

"Weapons and IS documents were seized," he added in a post on the micro-blogging site.

However, Khalid in a statement later clarified that the suspect was arrested at Setiawangsa LRT.

E8 is the counter-terrorism unit of the Special Branch, the intelligence arm of the police force.

The arrest comes as Malaysian authorities ramp up security at public places after IS had launched a series of bombings in Jakarta on Thursday.

The attack is the first by IS in Southeast Asia, and the closest yet to Malaysia.

The organisation has established its own caliphate in large swathes of territories, which it controls in Iraq and Syria.
