Former prime minister Mahathir Mohammad and Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin should make practical suggestions to save the party from 'money politics', urged Bersih.
The Coalition for Clean and Fair Election said the duo have criticised money politics and the political funds channelled into the party's president Najib Abdul Razak's personal accounts, but didn't moot any action plan to ensure the integrity of political funds.
In a statement, Bersih called the two Umno 'rebel' leaders not to waste their efforts, but to come up with practical ideas to get rid of the 'cash is king' culture in the party.
"If they can't, Bersih 2.0 suggests that Mahathir and Muhyiddin suppport the call of 70 bodies for reform of political funding, led by G25 and Bersih 2.0, launched two weeks ago."
Some of the suggestions by the group including setting limits to yearly contributions, transparency on the identity of donors and the total amounts donated, and a ban on slush funds.
Bersih said these suggestions should be supported by the Mahathir-Muhyiddin camp, and they should even go on a nationwide campaign to explain how dangerous secret funding is, and the importance of transparency and accountability.
Bersih also challenged the duo to openly support the above suggestions if they were sincere in fighting for transparency and integrity to save their party, and more importantly, to save the country.
“If they fail to do something substantive like this or come up with their own suggestions, Bersih will reckon that Mahathir-Muhyiddin has lost out to Najib,” it concluded.
