On hindsight, Pakatan Rakyat's failure to capture Putrajaya in the 13th general election was a "blessing in disguise", says DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang.
This is because PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang never agreed to the choice of jailed former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister, Lim said.
"Pakatan Rakyat would have faced its first major crisis of survival immediately after the election, even before the first Pakatan federal government and cabinet are formed, as (Hadi) had never agreed to Anwar as Pakatan's choice for prime minister," Lim said in a speech in Johor last Saturday.
If opposition can capture Johor...
While the rakyat have been dismayed by the demise of Pakatan, he said, the new opposition coalition Pakatan Harapan has filled that void.
He also noted the importance of Johor, saying that if Pakatan Harapan could capture the Johor state government in the next general election, there is very little that Umno-BN could do to prevent them from capturing Putrajaya as well.
While Lim admitted that it would have been near impossible for the opposition to capture Johor before 2008, the political landscape has changed drastically since.
"But after the 2013 general election, if anybody should ask whether it is possible for the opposition to win over the Johor government, the answer would be a powerful 'yes' for the majority of thinking people in the state," he said.
Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has shown how insensitive his administration is to all Malaysians, Lim added.
Five "government" scandals" prove his point, he said, citing the issues of 1MDB, the RM2.6 billion "donation" found in Najib's personal bank accounts, the passing of the National Security Council (NSC) Bill, the implementation of the goods and services tax (GST) and the red shirt rally of Sept 16.
These are good reasons why Najib and his administration have lost the right to run the federal government, he said.
He also lamented that none of the Umno-BN lawmakers had spoken up on the issues mentioned.
"(The five government scandals) show that Najib and his government are utterly insensitive to the rights and concerns of all Malaysians, regardless of race, religion or region," Lim, the MP for Gelang Patah, added.
