Already struggling to stay afloat in Umno, former rural and regional development minister Shafie Apdal took a literal dive into the ocean during a visit to his Semporna constituency last Friday.

A Facebook user uploaded several photographs of the incident on his account under the name ‘Tun Razak’.

“The jetty that Datuk Shafie Apdal was walking on had collapsed and caused him to fall into the ocean during a visit to Pulau Selakan (in Semporna),” he wrote in the caption.

The Facebook account user also shared photos taken before and after the incident at one of Semporna’s water villages, famed for the beauty of their surrounding seas.

Among others, Shafie and his team were seen walking on the wooden jetty and was photographed looking at a small sampan .

Based on the photo, the Umno vice-president was seen wearing black trousers, a long-sleeved shirt and a songkok.

An aide to Shafie confirmed with Malaysiakini that Shafie had fallen into waist-deep water but no injuries were sustained.

“He (Shafie) was in Semporna to present house keys to owners under the government’s low-cost housing scheme.

“There were no injuries. Tomorrow (Dec 7) he will be present at Kelab Sultan Sulaiman,” he said, referring to the planned event where Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin is expected to address his supporters.

Shafie and Muhyiddin were both dropped from Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s cabinet after their vocal criticisms on issues surrounding the management of state investment arm 1MDB.
