Dr Mahathir Mohamad has demanded proof that the RM2.6 billion transferred into Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's personal bank accounts did not originate from 1MDB.
"You say the MACC (Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission) verified that the RM2.6 billion did not come from 1MDB.
"Government departments and personnel are now under pressure. They can be sacked or transferred. A DPP (deputy public prosecutor) was dismissed.
"People making reports are being arrested. Their lawyers can be arrested. People living under threats are not reliable when making statements," the former prime minister said in his blog today.
Therefore, Mahathir said, the statement by MACC personnel cannot be accepted at face value.
"We want proof. We want to know how RM2.6 billion in the PM's account is not from 1MDB.
"We must know where all the RM42 billion (1MDB debts) are. Your explanations are without proof," he added.
Najib and his supporters have described the RM2.6 billion, transferred prior to the last general election, as a political donation from a Middle Eastern source.
Mahathir was responding to the clarifications issued by 1MDB, which obviously had failed to convince the former prime minister.
"Thank you for the clarification on the issues raised. Because you missed out on many things in your earlier statements, I had to make certain assumptions and ask for clarification.
"Now, may I explain why you are still misleading the readers in my blog and others," he added.
More than just 'hanky-panky'
Mahathir than went on to list a slew of issues he had with 1MDB including the company's purchase and reselling of cheap land from the government and the acquiring of power assets at inflated prices.
"Are these how 1MDB makes money through strategic investments?" he questioned.
Mahathir said until the government allowed for a proper audit by non-government auditors, he is entitled to make reasonable assumptions that there is more than just 'hanky-panky' in the transactions of 1MDB.
"It is the norm for an external audit to be done. This is big money. Just saying it is a donation is not enough. Give credible evidence.
"Government institutions have been stopped from auditing and reporting on 1MDB.
"There is a deliberate attempt to hide the activities of 1MDB, the RM2.6 billion in Najib’s personal account and the transactions involving PetroSaudi, Caymans, Seychelles, Hong Kong, Switzerland, the UK and America," he noted.
