MRT project owner MRT Corp is proposing a redesign of the MRT Ampang Park station, so Kuala Lumpur's oldest shopping mall Ampang Park Shopping Centre will not be demolished .
This means shifting the MRT station slightly away from the mall and building an underground pedestrian tunnel to connect the two.
For this, the strata unit owners need to give the government full rights to the land below ground, it said.
"There will be a need for 100 percent agreement from all the strata unit owners for the mutual agreement to be implemented," it said in a statement today.
It said the offer stands until Jan 31, 2016, upon which the mutual agreement must be concluded and signed.
The redesign means the foundation of the mall will be stengthened while basement carpark and ground floor will be closed for 36 and 18 months respectively for construction, it said.
Businesses operating in these areas will have to shut down and 'appropriate compensation' will be paid, it said.
"For the other shoplots which are unaffected by the construction, business can operate as usual," it said.
The new design will mean commuters will have to walk an additional 90 metres between the MRT and LRT stations, it added.
The Ampang Park MRT Station will link the MRT Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya Line with the Kelana Jaya LRT line.
MRT Corp earlier proposed to demolish the 42-year-old mall, with reconstruction to take seven years.
