Anwar Ibrahim today filed a defamation suit against a former Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for Permatang Pauh and two others for implicating him of bribing judges and prosecutors.
Anwar, 64, filed the suit through the legal firm of Messrs Karpal Singh & Co at the Civil High Court registry.
In the suit, which named Dr Mazlan Ismail, Sistem Televisyen Malaysia (TV3) and Utusan Melayu (M) Bhd as defendants, Anwar claimed that Mazlan had caused TV3 to publish the alleged defamatory words on ‘Buletin Utama’ at 8 pm on Aug 2, 2013.
He claimed that Mazlan had called a media conference during which the alleged defamatory words were uttered and were also published by Utusan Malaysia on Aug 3, 2013.
Anwar claimed the words were seriously defamatory and malicious which reflected him as a person without ethics, is corrupt, having engaged in criminal activities, as well as a dishonest and immoral person.
Besides general, aggravated and exemplary damages, Anwar is also seeking an injunction to prevent the defendants from repeating or further publishing the alleged defamatory remarks.
