Giving prominence to only the portion of the Conference of Rulers decree on 1MDB places the rulers in political crossfire, Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak says.
The rulers had discussed various issues, Salleh said, and also made a call to end racism. However, the focus has only been on their call for investigations on 1MDB to wrapped up and wrongdoers, if any, to be punished.
“The impression being given is that the Rulers discussed only the 1MDB matter and nothing else.
“Being the 239th Conference of Rulers over the last 58 years since Merdeka, surely many things would have been discussed.
“So why is the impression being created that the Conference of Rulers is a single-issue conference?” Salleh asked in a blog posting today.
He said the Attorney-General’s Chambers and Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (photo) have all responded to the decree.
As such, it was wrong to say the government was not heeding the rulers’ call.
We haven't been silent
In its response yesterday, Attorney-General’s Chambers said it cleared 1MDB officials of wrongdoing related to investigations carried out by Bank Negara Malaysia, despite BNM resubmitting its report to seek action.
Ahmad Zahid in a statement yesterday said Malaysia practices separation of powers, and both the rulers and the government must adhere to this principle, and to the rule of law.
Thus, no one should push for 1MDB investigations to be hastened or delayed as the probe must follow due course and be guided by law.
Salleh said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) also responded to the rulers’ decree, but there has been no such response.
