Former attorney-general (AG) Abdul Gani Patail has been urged to come out into the open to clarify the scandal surrounding the debt ridden 1MDB, that he had allegedly said was “crystal clear” before he was unceremoniously fired.

Former Special Branch (SB) deputy director Abdul Hamid Bador in a scathing open letter to the government circulated to the media yesterday, asked why Gani has now vanished from view.

Relating his last meeting with Gani before the latter was replaced, Hamid said the former AG had been vocal about the case.

According to him, Gani had said the case was “crystal clear”.

“However after he was ‘fired’, he has gone silent and totally mute,” said Hamid ( left ) in his letter.

“What has happened to you? There are those who say you have received threats forcing you to back down.

“It is suggested (Gani) had some scandal or misconduct that could be used by them to discredit him in public.

“Come on, Gani! What is a small personal scandal, even if there is such, when compared to the horrific impact the 1MDB fiasco has unto the nation!

“People will easily forgive you. Come out and make a stand. All this while you are idolised as a tough fighter among the civil servants,” said Hamid.

1MDB probe scuttled

The long-serving former AG was sacked at the height of the task force probe into the scandal and the RM2.6 billion deposited into Prime Minister Najib Razak’s personal bank accounts, ostensibly due to ‘health problems’.

However, Gani was apparently taken aback by the announcement, but remained tight-lipped to the media.

He was replaced by former Federal Court judge Mohamed Apandi Ali, while Gani was redesignated as a judicial and legal service officer until his mandatory retirement on Oct 6 .

It was part of a series of moves by the Najib administration, that included the scuttling of the parliamentary public accounts committee (PAC) with the promotion of four of its Umno members into the ministries, the sacking of then deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin and cabinet minister Shafie Apdal, and the eventual disbanding of the task force.

It also saw several task force personnel detained and others transferred, the latter of whom included Hamid.

He claims his 37 years of service in the Special Branch was curtailed to shut him up on the 1MDB scandal.

In his open letter today, Hamid revealed that Gani has a treatable kidney disease, and expressed disgust that it has been used as an excuse to remove him from office.

“Tan Sri (Gani) himself had told me with great enthusiasm about the specialist doctor’s plans to do a kidney transplant after the last Aidil Fitri. Their actions against Tan Sri is so despicable and disgusting.

“Before the tragedy of that sacking, I was very confident in Tan Sri’s firmness in heading the special task force on 1MDB,” he said.

He also recounted his last meeting with Gani prior to the latter’s removal from office, where Gani related that he was not trying to topple the government.

He quoted Gani saying, “Hey look… this difficult decision that I have made is not about toppling the government. I am not interested in politics. I am just doing my job.”

Hamid said he responded by snapping to attention and saluting Gani.

“I can never forget this special moment, sir,” he said in his letter.
