Stop threats to hold Petaling Street rally, red shirts told

The red shirt protesters should stop their threats to hold another rally on Petaling Street tomorrow, Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed has said.

The red shirts have already had their say during their rally on Sept 16, Nur Jazlan said.

Putting aside his position as a deputy minister and an Umno member, he said, even he as a Malay believes Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Md Yunos should stop the rally.

“Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Md Yunos ( photo ) should stop. Going further with another rally might actually be counter-productive to his previous efforts.

“A chance was given to him and his group to express their concerns but now, enough lah, stop,” Nur Jazlan told The Star yesterday.

He said Malaysians are given leeway to exercise their freedom of speech but the buck should stop when racial sensitivities are touched.

“That is why the police are taking action."

Jamal had warned that a riot could take place on Petaling Street, unless the authorities act against counterfeit goods and foreign traders at the popular tourist spot by today.

He said those showing up would be the same group who had attempted to storm Petaling Street during the Himpunan Rakyat Bersatu rally on Sept 16.

“I am the middleman between those who rioted that day (and the ministry). I have conveyed their demands to the authorities and it is now up to the authorities.

“But if the authorities don't take action by Friday and if anything happens, I would not be responsible,” Jamal told reporters on Wednesday.
