DAP did not expect Malays to rise up to defend their rights and dignity after being ridiculed by non-Malays for a long time, said Cheras Umno division leader Syed Ali Alhabshee.
He said DAP and ant-government forces were proud of the "illegal" Bersih 4 rally and underestimated Umno's strength.
Syed Ali said they should not be surprised the Malays had retaliated.
"DAP and the non-Malays must remember, Umno and the Malays would not stay silent forever," he added in a blog posting in reference to yesterday's red-shirts rally.
However, Syed Ali stressed Umno was not racist and blamed DAP for sowing the perception.
"Yes, Umno would defend the Malays, hundreds of thousands of Umno members would rise if the situation becomes too much, but we are not racist," he said.
"The claims that Umno is racist is nonsense. Umno is not like DAP. They (DAP) twist their accusations after they realised Malays still have honour and dignity," he added.
Syed Ali said Umno's fight is for the national spirit as well as to defend Islam as the country's official religion.
He also said if Umno was racist, the non-Malays would have lost their place in this country a long time ago.
Instead, Umno has always respected the rights and freedoms of the non-Malays and its fellow component parties in BN.
"Even though Umno fights for the rights and privileges of the Malays, it has never been cruel to non-Malays," he added.
Syed Ali also argued that the red-shirts rally proved the opposition wrong as it showed that Umno was still relevant.
On a separate matter, Syed Ali also said he hopes the government would revive the Internal Security Act (ISA) to keep the nation safe.
The Umno division leader said those who gathered yesterday also wanted the ISA returned.
"So I hope Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak will listen to them," he added.
