The discovery of a burnt car in Kampung Sungai Samak, Hilir Perak has fuelled speculations of a link to the missing Attorney-General's Chambers officer reported yesterday.
According to Berita Harian today, police found the remains of a car resembling a Proton Perdana in an oil palm plantation about three kilometres off the main road, far from any residential area.
There are elements of premeditation, Hilir Perak district police chief assistant commissioner Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain reportedly said, but the make of the car could not be verified as the model number had been destroyed in the fire.
He added it is still too soon to say if the burnt car is linked to the deputy public prosecutor's disappearance.
He said no human remains were found in the wreck and they have engaged an expert to determine the model of the car.
“The model looks to be like a Proton Perdana and also sometimes looks like a Honda Accord. This is why we need the expert to verify it,” he was reported saying.
The government's Proton Perdana is based on the Honda Accord.
Prominent deputy public prosecutor Kevin Morais was reportedly last seen driving a Proton Perdana last Friday.
A relative of the officer, who had been previously seconded to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for a period of time, lodged a report on Morais' disappearance yesterday.
Morais is currently the prosecutor handling the former Sime Darby Bhd chief executive officer Ahmad Zubair @ Ahmad Zubir Murshid’s criminal breach of trust case.
In a statement this afternoon, the MACC expressed "shock" over the disappearance.
MACC investigations department director Azam Baki said Morais handled many high profile cases while he was seconded to MACC.
"He is still handling several cases related to MACC today," he said, urging a stop to any speculation.
"I knew Kevin Morais closely when he was working in MACC and hope all parties can pray for his safe return," he said.
