Zaid Ibrahim has called on Bersih to apologise to PAS over the incident where protesters were photographed stomping on an image of PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.
"Bersih must quickly apologise to PAS, stomping Hadi was an unfortunate incident that could not be blamed on Bersih, but say sorry," he tweeted.
"Its not hard to say sorry when it can help in achieving the cause reformists are fighting for. PAS members will appreciate the gesture," added the former law minister.
PAS members have fumed over the incident, calling it disrespectful and police reports have been lodged.
During the rally, protesters had vented their frustration on a photo-shopped image of Abdul Hadi hugging Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
Since Bersih 4 saw the participants being largely Chinese Malaysians, pro-Umno blogs had zoomed in on such incidents.
The blogs uploaded images of similar incidents such as protesters hitting an image of Najib and his wife Rosmah Mansor with a slipper as well as kicking an inflated punching bag with Najib's caricature.
Hitting someone's image with a slipper is a practice which originated from China. It is aimed at cursing one's enemies.
Exploiting the racial card, Umno leaders also called on the Malays to unite in the aftermath of Bersih 4.
Some have argued that such incidents are expected at mass gatherings and noted how Umno or those affiliated to it had also resorted to such actions, such as stepping on the portrait of Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.
However, observers noted that Bersih 4 could backfire on the opposition on a racial front.
The 34-hour rally over the weekend among others pressed for Najib's resignation.
