The Selangor Umno leadership has been reminded to move actively as the 'opposition' to regain the support of the people for the BN and win back the state in the next general election.
Urging this last night, Umno vice-president and Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the Umno leaders and grassroots members must have mutual respect for each other to strengthen the party and redeem the defeats in the Selangor state constituencies won by the opposition pact.
"Nobody else can deliver victory to Umno in Selangor except the members themselves.
"In this regard, Umno members must think as the opposition, act as the opposition party in order to regain the support of the people (for the BN)," Zahid said when opening the Petaling Jaya Selatan Umno divisional delegates meeting.
He said support for the BN was necessary in order to form the new government in Selangor to serve the community.
Also present was Selangor Umno chief Noh Omar.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid said if Selangor Umno were to win in the next general election in the state, he would suggest that the state be allocated three cabinet ministers' posts as there was no full minister's post held by any Selangor BN leader currently.
He also said he would ensure that all BN leaders would mobilise the party machinery in the Petaling Jaya Selatan parliamentary constituency to wrest back the Taman Medan state seat, which is under the parliamentary constituency, from the opposition.
Zahid also thanked all leaders in the Umno divisions in Selangor who passed the motion to support the leadership of Najib Abdul Razak as Umno president and prime minister.
He said he also supported the proposal by Selangor Umno which will gather all the grassroots leaders at a venue before the Umno general assembly this year.
