YOURSAY ‘No one booed and obviously Mahathir was not afraid for his safety.’
Dr M and wife make surprise visit at Bersih 4
Bert: Most of us had some complaints or other about Dr Mahathir Mohamad when he was PM.
Whatever it is, even the few minutes he spent with the crowd of Bersih 4 has given the rally an additional boost.
A rally of this kind makes no distinction between race or religion. This is what really 1Malaysia is about.
Roar For Truth : I’m proud to be a Malaysian. How the crowd treated Mahathir and his wife, Siti Hasmah Ali, is what Malaysians should be - a gracious and peaceful people.
No one booed at them and obviously Mahathir was not afraid for his safety despite what he had said and done in the past. Well done to the crowd at Bersih 4. I’m proud of all of you.
Anonymous_1420294337: Thank you, Mahathir. It's not about race but our beloved country call Malaysia.
We hope that you will live to see changes. All Bersih 4 rally-goers, good work and keep it up. We will rock this nation and fight for our rights.
Asitis: Maybe, after trying so hard but unsuccessfully to oust PM Najib Razak, he finally realised that true power in this country lies with the common people.
Though I doubt Mahathir’s sincerity, I still have to give him some points for his guts to show up. And I think it is also polite to thank him for his presence, which I think will give Bersih 4 a boost.
Gunnerrun: I really hope somehow this will be the most beautiful start we can have to allow the country to mature and that it will shower all its citizens with love, kindness and happiness as long as we are loyal and ‘filial’ to the country and the country treats all its sons and daughters like how a loving and compassionate parent treat their children. God save Malaysia.
Anonymous 759201436321741: How poetic! In his twilight year, finally Dr M has made his peace (reconciliation) with the rakyat - in of all places, at the Bersih 4 rally.
Mahathir wants 'bangsat' Najib to leave
Quigonbond: In a very strange way, Bersih and Pakatan Rakyat are helping BN. If Najib is successfully removed, people will remember Umno not for their internecine struggle and pursuit of absolute power, but that they do actually draw a moral line, and might give them the benefit of the doubt.
It could either spur them to moderation, which is fine by the rakyat because we couldn't really care who is holding the reins of power as long as there is transparency and intelligence.
Or are they really just want to enjoy the spoils of war amassed by Najib, and then they go back to their old condescending and small-minded ways. But we can't worry about too many things for now.
Remove Najib first, and perhaps with a change in the dynamics of power play between the opposition and BN, BN will be more reticent to take the extreme paths in the future.
One can only hope. Otherwise, people power may well serve to finish BN off in GE14. GE14 is for BN to screw up if Najib was removed.
Mahathir does not need to say anything. There is no other way to convince BN parliamentarians to boot out Najib unless they fear losing power in GE14 more than they love Najib's unaccounted RM2.6 billon.
Sometimes when we speak little, when we do speak, people listen. Siti Hasmah has done a great service to Bersih 4 cause.
I’m not sure what the future will hold even with Najib gone. Will Dr M go all the way and require Malaysia to turn into a real, vibrant democracy free from the shackles of neo-Malay supremist colonialism ala Umno?
But we take what we can first, and the first thing to do is to kick that man out.
Hank Marvin: Sorry Mahathir, our problems won't get solved just by removing Najib. We have to remove Umno and BN to solve the problems of this country. And you may have to pay the price too. Not just Najib.
Clever Voter: To the laymen, Mahathir brought visible changes, while many benefitted economically most had high tolerance for press controls and mismanagement of public agencies.
Najib has brought zero benefits but economic miseries, high wastage and borrowings. The other major difference is the woman behind these men. We can see why this is the case.
Hank Marvin: Mahathir is doing exactly what he used to fear: instigating people to get to the street. The problem with this senile old man is that he actually wants to keep Umno-BN in power.
He only seeks to get Najib out. This won't solve our problems. Malaysia needs an overhaul, get Umno-BN out.
Justine Gow: To Mahathir, I would like to paraphrase a quote from Albert Camus:
"Don't walk in front of us, we may not follow; don't walk behind us, we may not lead; just walk beside us to save our nation."
