Public university students are advised not to get involved in politically-motivated demonstrations as the action can bring about negative impact on themselves.
In fact, Higher Education Minister Idris Jusoh said the students should focus only on their studies as they were the ones who would suffer if they failed to complete their tertiary education.
“The government is spending an average of RM18,000 a year (in loans) for each university student in the country and if he or she fails, it is the country’s loss because each student is an asset to the country.
“Although the government has given the students the freedom to join politics, but it must be viewed in a bigger context... they can join politics, but must wait until they finish their studies,” he told reporters after opening Machang Wanita Umno delegates meeting in Machang today.
Also present were Machang Umno chief who is also Deputy Rural and Regional Development Minister Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub and Machang Wanita Umno chief Senator Rahimah Mohamed.
Idris said this in response to the possible involvement of university students in the illegal Bersih 4 rally planned to be held in Kuala Lumpur this weekend.
The minister said the university could take action according to the university regulations against their students if they were found to have participated in the rally.
Meanwhile, Idris, who is also Besut Member of Parliament, in his speech underlined three important aspects for Kelantan Barisan Nasional (BN) to win back Kelantan from PAS like the Terengganu BN did in Terengganu in the 12th general election.
“Firstly, change the mindset... must always think of victory. Secondly, don’t delve into problems, but instead focus on finding the solutions.
“Thirdly and most importantly, we must be sincere in fighting for our cause. If we are not elected to be the leader or to hold any posts in the party, we must accept it and stay united,” he added.
