Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has urged retirees to assist the government to rebuff allegations spread through the social media.
Najib said they were the right ones, since they are aware of the government's policies as many of them may have served since Malaysia gained independence and would have witnessed the development and transformation that took place in the country throughout the years.
"I seek their help to disseminate the good deeds of the government… because they (retirees) understand the government's policies… there have been a lot of baseless accusations in the social media that need to be corrected.
"Please help me to correct the perception," Najib said at the Malaysian Government Retirees Association (PPKM) dinner in Kuala Lumpur last night.
Their support needed for transformation
Najib who attended the dinner with his wife Rosmah Mansor, said as the prime minister, he needed the commitment and support of the 46,000 PPKM members to achieve the transformation aspired by the nation.
"The fate of the retirees is very closely related to the status of the government," he said, adding that the peace and stability enjoyed by a nation will also benefit retirees.
"I can assure that if the country progress well, I will not forget the welfare of the retirees… we cannot ignore civil servants who have retired… we cannot sideline them or forget their contributions and sacrifice."
Najib said though retirees were no longer in government service, they could still contribute to the nation with their strong mind and spirit.
He said though the government had approved an allocation of RM5 million to the Yayasan Pesara Kerajaan Malaysia, the amount would be increased from time to time to ensure the welfare of retirees.
