Toppling Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak through a vote of no confidence is not illegal, a PKR lawmaker says.
Alor Setar MP Gooi Hsiao Leung said a vote of no confidence is both constitutional and representative of the people's will.
"I believe this will be a call of duty of all MPs, regardless of which party they represent, including the Barisan Nasional MPs.
"(It is) doing what is right and necessary in these desperate times in order to save our country from political instability and economic doom," he said in a statement today.
Gooi ( photo ) was responding to Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak's assertions that the government can only be changed through elections.
He disagreed with this view, saying that a government can only rule if it enjoys majority support.
"Wining an election and being in government does not make the government untouchable for five years, nor give it the licence to plunder, steal or rob the country for five years with impunity," the lawmaker added.
Conspiracy theory to distract people
Zahid said last Saturday that Umno man was plotting to overthrow Najib through the backdoor by collecting statutory declarations from BN and opposition lawmakers.
PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said this conspiracy theory was an effort to distract the people from 1MDB and Najib's RM2.6 billion donation.
"The people must be wary and not be distracted from the real problems plaguing this country.
"Keep the pressure up so the truth about 1MDB and the RM2.6 billion donation will come out," Tuan Ibrahim said in a statement today.
