Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today received his letter of appointment as the deputy prime minister from Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak at Perdana Putra in Putrajaya.
Zahid, who is also the home minister, replaced Muhyiddin Yassin in the cabinet reshuffle announced on July 28.
Shortly after receiving the appointment letter, Zahid, accompanied by chief secretary to the government Ali Hamsa, proceeded to the deputy prime minister's office to begin duty on his first day in office.
He punched the attendance card at his new office at 8.30am.
Zahid, who looked cheerful, later joined the prayers led by Ustaz Azhar Tuarno, the religious officer in the Prime Minister's Department.
Earlier, Zahid took part in the monthly assembly of the Prime Minister's Department for the first time as the deputy prime minister.
The assembly was also joined by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Azalina Othman Said and Deputy Minister Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, who were also recently appointed to their respective posts.
