An opposition MP has slammed Home Minister Zahid Hamidi for not probing the leaked video of former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin that contained incriminating remarks against Prime Minister Najib Razak.
"At the very least, Muhyiddin and even Kedah MB Mukhriz Mahathir, who was shown to be present in the leaked video clip should be called up by the police to record their statements.
"They should not be treated differently to other parties which Zahid and the inspector-general of police (IGP) have brazenly threatened with the full brunt of the law for discrediting the PM and conspiring to overthrow the government," said Alor Setar MP Gooi Hsiao Leung in a statement today.
The PKR supreme council member said remarks by Muhyiddin, as the country's second in command at the time, should not be treated lightly.
Zahid yesterday dismissed the video , in which Muhyddin claimed knowledge of the RM2.6 billion allegedly deposited into Najib's personal bank accounts, as the words of a man upset at having been sacked.
The newly minted deputy PM added the police will not probe Muhyiddin over the video.
"Are Muhyiddin’s words not worth his salt?" asked Gooi.
"Surely, Zahid out of respect for Muhyiddin’s position, should accept what he says on face value to be true unless he is implying that it was all cooked up by Muhyiddin out of anger for being axed in the cabinet reshuffle," he said.
"Zahid Hamidi should be reminded that just three days ago, Muhyiddin served as the country’s deputy prime minister and is still Umno’s deputy president," he added.
Special treatment?
Gooi asked why Muhyiddin is being spared the full force of the law normally used against critics of the government, especially when he has discredited the PM.
"Muhyiddin’s statement, as a former deputy prime minister is most grave and serious – as it is tantamount to a 'confession' by the prime minister himself [...] which are clearly grounds for criminal investigations concerning embezzlement and corruption, and Najib Razak’s resignation as prime minister," he added.
"Already, the public has lost confidence in the government that any investigations concerning 1MDB will uncover the truth - especially after Najib’s Night of the Long Knives in axing those opposed to him in the cabinet reshuffle, derailment of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) investigations on 1MDB, and the removal of the attorney-general who was in the midst of investigating the 1MDB financial scandal implicating the PM."
