Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has been urged to deny claims that RM2.6 billion was deposited into his private bank accounts - like how he denied any link to murdered Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibuu - by taking a religious oath.
Umno activist Shahbudin Husin, an ally of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, said this is in light of a leaked video in which former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin claims that Najib admitted to receiving the money.
"The best option for Najib is to go to any mosque, hold the Quran and swear in Allah's name that RM2.6 billion never went into his private accounts and that the claims are merely slander.
"If he can courageously swear that he never knew Altantuya, then Najib should dare to do it again to clear his name and restore the rakyat's confidence in Umno and his government," Shahbudin ( photo ) said in his blog posting today.
On Aug 23, 2008, Najib swore in a mosque in Guar Perahu, Bukit Mertajam, that he never knew Altantuya.
This came amidst the arrest of two of his bodyguards and a close associate, Abdul Razak Baginda, following the gruesome murder of Altantuya and the blowing up of her body with C4 explosives.
Razak was later cleared of being an accomplice in the murder, with having to make his defence, by the High Court in Shah Alam.
However, the two the bodyguards Special Forces commandos Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri and Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar were convicted of the murder.
Shahbudin said as long as Najib does not convincingly address the RM2.6 billion issue, support for Umno and BN would continue to erode until the next general election.
