Umno deputy permanent chairperson Mohamad Aziz has fired the first salvo against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak for removing his deputy Muhyiddin Yassin from the cabinet.
Mohamad, who is also Johor assembly speaker and an Umno veteran of more than five decades, accused Najib of trying to wreck the party.
“This is not good at all for Umno, for his action will soon destroy the party. If it happens, we know who is to blame.
“I do not know what kind of advice Najib received, but he must now live with the consequences,” Mohamad is quoted as saying by The Star today.
Mohamad (photo) is also quoted as reminding Najib that his position, like Muhyiddin's, was due to grassroots support.
Najib yesterday removed Muhyiddin and also Rural and Regional Development Minister Shafie Apdal from the cabinet for their criticism of his handling of the 1MDB matter.
Mohamad criticised Najib for trying to silence those who were expressing concern about the strategic fund, which has accumulated RM41.8 billion in debts.
“Was it wrong for an Umno deputy president to talk about an issue that has been worrying the rakyat?
"Najib should know what is more important – 1MDB or the survival of Umno,” Mohamad is quoted as saying, adding that 1MDB had caused havoc in the party.
