PAS may be taking its Islamic politics too far, as certain party members' calls for breakaway members to honour their oath to divorce their wives has earned a ticking off from the Perlis mufti.
"The aim of politics is to build up society and country to greater heights.
"However, it is terribly bad if party politics is held ransom to the point that it destroys the household," said Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin on his Facebook today.
"The wife at home (presumably) is divorced ( talak tiga ) by the husband because of the game of party politics," he said.
Although Asri did not elaborate, he is likely responding to Kelantan Menteri Besar Ahmad Yaakob, who was reported in Sinar Harian yesterday reminding PAS members who joined other parties of the oath to divorce their wives.
Ahmad was responding to PAS Kelantan members who were reportedly discussing the oath on WhatsApp with regards to PAS' breakaway group.
PAS Youth chief Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz ( photo ) also commented this week that those forming a new party have to uphold their religious oath, referring to the giving up of elected representatives' seats.
In response, one of the progressives, Parit Buntar MP Mujahid Yusof Rawa, said the oath did not apply as PAS had betrayed its members.
"The issue of betrayal; what betrayal is it? If the party itself betrays (the person who took the oath), then how are we going to follow the rules of the party?" he retorted.
Meanwhile Asri said it is unfortunate if the wife and the couple's children are made to suffer because of the politics of her husband.
He opined that unless there was clear intention to divorce, the matter should be seen as a deterrent and not legally binding.
