PM, wife to declare assets? Not in a million years

YOURSAY ‘Umno culture is such that money allegedly taken is acceptable.’

C4: Najib, Rosmah must declare assets now

CQ Muar: Way how to go, C4 executive director Cynthia Gabriel. Asking PM Najib Razak and his wife, Rosmah Mansor, to declare their assets has been the unanimous call of the nation and this is long overdue.

If Najib has desire to save the day, and his 'neck', his only option is to make a full declaration of his family’s assets.

Under the Financial Secrecy and Banking Act, financial institutions have the obligation to protect the interests of their clients by not revealing their bank balances.

But in the case of Najib and Rosmah, they have given rise to suspicions, thereby opened up avenues by the respective authorities to make such requests.

James TCLow: Sorry Cynthia, you shall not have your way. Brave and respected as you are, be prepared as harm to you may be on the way.

CucuMalaysia: Yes, it is a tall order for them to make any assets declaration. Considering they are living and spending beyond the means of the PM's salary and allowances, how can they declare their assets?

Anonymous_3e79: Indeed, what is the source of Rosmah’s income, since she claimed that she is just the wife of the PM and a housewife? Was her income declared in her tax submission?

Skippy: I'm sorry Cynthia, but did you say national duty? Seriously, national duty and this husband and wife team do not co-exist. Firstly, they know what it is but they don't seem to care.

Secondly, they have an entire coterie who tells them they don't have to care - keep silent, or if that's not an option, they'll say something else that is off tangent.

Those who have the power to do something will do nothing. Those of us who want something done can't do anything.

Ren Ai: It is reasonable to believe that a lot of this money was used by Najib to fund BN’s election campaigns in GE13. That election is essentially null and void under the law in view of such excesses. Are we ready to uphold the law?

Oh Ya?: All efforts are now focused on Najib and his family as well as the 1MDB saga. But they are only the tip of the iceberg.

Ask any Umnoputra and none of them will dare to show his/her hands that he/she does not have any skeleton in the closet.

‘Kangkung’ land has reached this state of affairs purely due to the systematic weakening of the governance process as well as independent institutions by the ruling elite to facilitate their rout.

Mushiro: Yes, the Umno culture is such that the money allegedly taken by the PM is acceptable by other leaders and the party’s grassroots. This is because they too are beneficiaries.

EmLaw: As Pascal Najadi so blatantly said, he will not come back to Malaysia as long as it's BN ruling. That says a lot.

He's the son of a local bank founder and certainly has more intimate knowledge and facts on what has been going on in the past 58 years.

Everyone can keep on urging, demanding and complaining - you think they care? Sad to say, the disease is so deeply-rooted, I really don't know how long it will take Malaysia to journey back to the light.

However, having said this, all Malaysians should not give up and even one more step towards the light at the end of the tunnel is one critical and necessary step.

Let's continue to work together to make this ‘mission impossible’ happen.

Meh: Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 -

50. (1) Where in any proceedings against any person for an offence under section 16, 17, 18, 20, 21, 22 or 23 it is proved that any gratification has been received or agreed to be received,

accepted or agreed to be accepted, obtained or attempted to be obtained, solicited, given or agreed to be given, promised, or offered, by or to the accused, the gratification shall be presumed to have been corruptly received or agreed to be received, accepted or agreed to be accepted, obtained or attempted to be obtained, solicited, given or agreed to be given, promised, or offered as an inducement or a reward for or on account of the matters set out in the particulars of the offence, unless the contrary is proved.

Lokaikai: This is a replay of the case involving ‘Ah Pian’ - ex-Taiwan president Chen Shui-pian. The stolen money were deposited into his family`s bank accounts.

Not Convinced: Indeed, when found to have US$20 million stashed in his Swiss bank account, former Taiwan president Chen said that these were ‘leftover money’ from the party’s election campaign coffers.

In 2009, Chen and his wife was eventually found guilty of taking US$9 million dollars in personal kickbacks on a state-sanctioned land deal, embezzling over US$3 million from a state fund and laundering millions to overseas accounts, including in the Cayman Islands.

Does this sound familiar? But US$31 million is a pittance compared to Malaysia’s US$700 million, no?
