A cabinet minister has urged the public to let the special task force probing allegations that RM2.6 billion was diverted to the personal accounts of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, do its job.
"Let them probe. I think nobody is above the law," said Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, who is also Najib's cousin.
He added the cabinet had brought up the matter today, had a rational discussion, and decided that the Wall Street Journal's (WSJ) reports deserved investigation.
The Umno vice-president expressed confidence in the competency of the members of the task force to carry out its duties.
"They are the attorney-general, the IGP, the governor of Central Bank, and chief commissioner of MACC,” Hishammuddin (photo) told the media while breaking the fast with his ministry.
"They are not ordinary people, if not them, then who else?" he said, shooting down calls to have the four changed.
The Opposition had called for Najib to take leave pending the investigation to guarantee the independence of the taskforce, failing which they had demanded the government replace the sitting members of the task force.
Hishammuddin also warned the people not to resort to emotions and wait for the results of its investigation.
The US-based financial daily had alleged that RM2.6 billion from 1MDB went into Najib's private bank accounts.
"The prime minister will take legal action on those who made the allegations. I felt that is best way " said Hishammuddin, who is also Sembrong parliamentarian.
He urged the public to let the investigation takes its course.
"In the fasting month, do not resort to speculation or accuse a person, who may be innocent," he requested.
Citing foreign countries which failed and ultimately caused their people to suffer, he cautioned Malaysians to do the right things.
"Don't quarrel among ourselves, don't revolt (against the government) and go to streets. Look at those countries, it’s too late once they are in trouble,” he noted.
