Leave or be escorted out, Bersih warns PM

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak may be escorted out by the rakyat if he still refuses to go on leave pending the investigation against him over allegations that RM2.6 billion was deposited into his personal accounts, Bersih says.

"Bersih calls on Najib to go on immediate leave and vacate the Finance Ministry position so as to allow a free and credible investigation.

"If he refuses, Bersih is confident and believes that Malaysians are prepared to escort him and his family out," the electoral reform movement said in a statement today.

The ultimatum comes after Bersih announced on Monday that it was considering a Bersih 4.0 rally if the authorities do not come clean on the controversy.

Contacted later, Bersih chief Maria Chin Abdullah said the protest, which is usually held in Kuala Lumpur, is unlikely to be held in Putrajaya where Najib's official residence is.

However, Maria ( photo ) said it would be a symbolic message to Najib's administration.

"We can send a delegation separately to Putrajaya to tell him to go on leave," she said.

For now, Bersih is calling on Najib to go on leave and make public the details of his personal accounts.

It is also calling on investigators to make the investigation public and also to freeze the bank accounts, the latter of which was done yesterday.

Bersih has set until August for its terms to be met or for the government to face the possibility of a Bersih 4.0 rally.

The electoral watchdog renewed its call after The Wall Street Journal yesterday released bank documents to support its report.

Najib has denied the allegation and blamed former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad for masterming such reports to oust him.
