Dewan Rakyat Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia has poured cold water on proposals to broadcast the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) 1MDB hearing live on television, saying this goes against Parliament's rules.
Pandikar said the proposal is against Standing Order 85 which does not allow any committee under the House to air the contents of its discussions so long as the statement of proceedings is yet to be submitted to the Dewan Rakyat.
He was quoted by bnbbc.my as saying the rule is to protect individuals testifying as they do not enjoy immunity, like MPs do.
"Besides, the right to first know about the testimonies and arguments in the meetings of these committees lie with the Parliament sitting, through the tabling of the statement of proceedings by the respective committees," Pandikar is quoted as saying.
DAP previously pressed Pandikar to walk the talk for parliamentary reform by allowing the PAC's proceedings on 1MDB to be broadcast live.
DAP's Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng had proposed for Standing Order 85 to be suspended.
PAC chairperson Nur Jazlan also stated that he had no qualms with a live broadcast.
However, Pandikar insisted that the rule stands and a live broadcast would not happen.
He added that a live broadcast would bring to moot the presentation of the findings of such committees
to the House moot.
